Mainstream Cruise Lines
The largest ships, the widest range of activities, and the most accessible price points. Mainstream lines work for families, groups, and first-time cruisers who want maximum choice onboard.
Royal Caribbean
Mainstream
The world's largest cruise line by tonnage. Royal Caribbean's mega-ships — Icon of the Seas at 250,000 tonnes is the current record holder — are essentially floating resorts with wave pools, ice skating rinks, go-kart tracks, and rock climbing walls. Outstanding for families and active travellers. Caribbean and European itineraries dominant.
Best for: Families, active travellers, and anyone who wants maximum onboard activities and entertainment alongside solid itinerary coverage.
Norwegian Cruise Line
Mainstream
Norwegian pioneered the “Freestyle Cruising” concept — no fixed dining times or assigned seating. Ships are large, energetic, and food-forward, with more included specialty dining restaurants than any comparable line. The Haven suite complex, available on most ships, provides a genuinely luxury experience within a mainstream vessel. Strong itinerary range including Europe, Caribbean, and Alaska.
Best for: Those who dislike fixed dining schedules and want flexibility, plus Haven suite guests seeking luxury within a larger ship environment.
Europe's largest privately-owned cruise line is growing rapidly and now operates globally. MSC ships have a distinctly Continental European feel — multilingual, stylish interiors, strong Mediterranean itinerary coverage. The Yacht Club, MSC's ship-within-a-ship suite concept, offers a genuinely premium product. Often the best-value option for European sailings.
Best for: Mediterranean sailings, value-conscious travellers, and those who appreciate a European style of cruising distinct from the North American mainstream.
Carnival Cruise Line
Value
The most accessible entry point into cruising. Carnival's “Fun Ships” are energetic, casual, and focused on entertainment and value. A strong choice for first-timers, younger travellers, and families on a budget. Almost exclusively Caribbean and short US coastal itineraries. What Carnival lacks in sophistication it makes up for in genuine onboard energy.
Best for: First-time cruisers, budget-conscious travellers, younger passengers, and families seeking the most affordable way to experience cruising.
Holland America Line
Mainstream
Holland America occupies the upper end of the mainstream tier with a focus on classic seafaring tradition, exceptional Alaskan itineraries, and a mature, quieter onboard environment. The Pinnacle Class ships are impressive; the Culinary Arts Center and music programme distinguish the onboard experience. Average passenger age is higher than most other mainstream lines.
Best for: Alaska sailings, longer itineraries, travellers who prefer a quieter ship environment, and those who appreciate traditional maritime touches.
Virgin Voyages
Adults Only
Virgin Voyages is adults-only (18+) and has deliberately broken with cruise convention. No buffet, no fixed dining rooms, no extra charges for specialty restaurants — all dining is included. The ships are boutique in feel despite carrying 2,700 passengers. Fares include wi-fi, all dining, group fitness classes, and basic bar tab. Aimed squarely at younger adults who have avoided cruising because of its traditional image.
Best for: Adults aged 25–50 who want an inclusive, energetic, unconventional cruise experience that feels more boutique hotel than traditional ship.
